Really unusual vintage sterling silver astrolabe. This is a copy of an original vintage astrolabe that would have been kept in a sailors pocket. It allowed mariners such as the Portuguese and Spaniards to navigate the oceans using the stars and the earth's horizon. Used from about 500 AD to the early 1600's. A really quirky and beautifully made piece. There is so much detail and marking and the central section spins beautifully and makes it very tactile. Really beautifully hinged top section that a chain would have to be looped through in a particular way, like when you wear a ring in a chain to make it lay perfectly when worn as not originally intended as a pendant.
Not marked but tests as silver. 37/500 made. Height 5.1cm including loop Diameter 3.4cm 19.3g
